Healthy Treat Options
As fun as it is to treat your pet, common snacks have more calories than you might think, which can lead to unwanted weight gain over time. To help you make healthier choices, we’ve put together this page featuring veterinary-approved guidance from Royal Canin.
Why Healthy Treats Matter
Even a few small treats can add up quickly! According to Royal Canin’s research, treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s total daily calorie intake.
Many favorites — like cheese, peanut butter, and rawhide bones — can account for 10–40% of a dog’s daily calories in just a few bites. Similarly, just a small amount of salmon or tuna can represent more than half of an average cat’s daily calorie needs.
Healthier Treat Alternatives
The handout includes a full list of low-calorie treats that are both nutritious and satisfying for dogs and cats.

- Cucumber: 15 calories per cup – refreshing and light.
